Neighbours are rallying to save one of Barrie's heritage properties, located on Sunnidale Road, about a block north of Highway 400, Saturday at 1 p.m.
Called Woodlawn, the Gothic Revival century home sits on a large lot, which features mixed hardwood trees, including maple, ash and black walnut. According to next-door neighbour Kathy Frye-Wright, many of the trees, like the home itself, are more than 100 years old and worthy of preservation.
But the family that owned Woodlawn is selling the home to a number company, 1138881 Ontario Ltd., which has applied to Barrie's committee of adjustment to sever the large lot into four, and construct three more homes. "He'll smush that house onto a very small lot," said Frye-Wright, who operates Gwen Cameron Bed and Breakfast on Sunnidale Road.
"He's going to crowd it in, leave it on a very small lot. It'll get lost. He'll destroy trees over 100 years old. It's turning into somewhat of a mess."
Frye-Wright is gathering with her neighbours in front of the old home, to increase awareness about the plans for the area. The plan to sever is going to the city's committee of adjustment Wednesday, at 6:30 p.m.
The proposed plan would see the old home on a long, narrow lot, with side yards of 4.2 and 4.8 metres, measuring from the widest part of the home. A lot would be created between Woodlawn and Frye-Wright's on Sunnidale. A third lot would have frontage of Sunnidale Road, and the three lots would have frontage of about 20.7 metres. A fourth lot would front onto Shirley.
Heritage Barrie chairperson Chuck Harris said the home is worth preserving as many of the city's homes that are similar have all been broken down into apartments and some have been further modified.
"All we can do is hopefully protect the house," said Harris, noting it's included in the city's Grand Homes tour guide.
"There's a handful of real elegant homes. They were special and we lost a lot of them."
